Police seize $20,000 in drugs, arrest employee at downtown magic mushroom shop

Windsor police seized $20,570 in illegal drugs and charged one individual after a raid at a downtown Windsor psilocybin dispensary on Monday afternoon.

Members of the Drugs and Guns Unit executed a search warrant at the ‘FunGuyz’ dispensary on Ouellette Avenue shortly after 4 p.m.

The dispensary sells psilocybin, which is more commonly referred to as “magic mushrooms.”

Police said seizures included:

  • 3,440 psilocybin capsules
  • 318.7 grams of dried psilocybin
  • 250 psilocybin-infused gummies
  • 53 psilocybin-infused chocolate bars
  • 7 psilocybin-infused vape cartridges
  • $3,320 in Canadian currency

Windsor police said a 20-year-old store employee at the scene has been charged with trafficking in a controlled substance and possession of a controlled substance for the purposes of trafficking.

As of Tuesday afternoon, FunGuyz downtown storefront could be seen boarded up.

Between July 2023 and April 2024, police seized $140,000 worth of psilocybin infused products as the result of four executed search warrants.

In November, FunGuyz announced it would shut down all 30 of its Ontario locations. At the time, a spokesperson for FunGuyz told CTV News their stores had been raided by police a collective 120 times.

Due to the costs, they stated the business could no longer afford to operate.

CTV News has reached out to FunGuyz for comment.

In Canada, under the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act, the sale, passion and production of magic mushrooms is illegal without authorization from Health Canada.

A news release issued by police noted Health Canada warns taking magic mushrooms can cause people to “see, hear or feel things that are not there, or to experience anxiety, fear, nausea and muscle twitches accompanied by increased heart rate and blood pressure.”

Police say the investigation remains ongoing and anyone with information is asked to Windsor Police DIGS Unit at 519-255-6700, ext. 4361. They can also contact Windsor & Essex County Crime Stoppers anonymously at 519-258-8477(TIPS) or online at http://catchcrooks.com
